BIOBULB

AI - Smart Buildings & Sustainable Innovation

BioBulb is an innovative smart home solution designed to sustain plant life indoors at scale, leveraging a combination of artificial intelligence and smart hardware. As a co-founder, I helped develop this technology with a vision for the future, where buildings are not only smart but also sustainable. BioBulb integrates seamlessly into the architecture of modern buildings, offering sculptural green landscapes such as vertical gardens and living sculptures indoors. The core of the system lies in the smart hardware—a plug-and-play device akin to a light bulb, but now for plants. This hardware, combined with an advanced backend that processes data from various sensors, ensures plants receive the optimal conditions for growth, making smart buildings greener and more sustainable.

Global Expos and Recogntition

BioBulb has garnered significant attention on the global stage, being showcased at prestigious events such as the grand opening of the Autodesk Gallery, next to the space industry exhibition. We have also delivered keynotes and participated in TEDx events, presenting the potential of this cutting-edge technology. Our presence at Viva Technology, the largest tech expo in the European Union, further solidified BioBulb’s role as a leader in smart home innovation. These events have allowed us to share our vision with a wide audience and receive valuable feedback from industry leaders, propelling the project toward new opportunities and partnerships.

A NEW CATEGORY

Prop Tech

BioBulb introduces a new category of smart home technology: integrated nature. By connecting nature to the Internet of Things (IoT), BioBulb seamlessly integrates plant life into the smart home ecosystem. Unlike conventional smart home devices that focus on comfort and convenience, BioBulb adds a living element, where data-driven insights optimize the growth and health of indoor plants. This intersection of AI, smart hardware, and nature transforms homes into lush, sustainable environments, merging the benefits of indoor greenery with the intelligence of modern smart systems.

An Integrated Solution for Real Estate

We researched pain points for property managers and real estate management companies, and our response was a digitally integrated solution allowing for seamless monitoring and autonomous maintenance of the physical installation.

Smart Building & Nature

One pivotal moment in BioBulb’s development came when we connected sensors to a plant, enabling two-way communication between technology and nature. This process involved gathering data directly from the plant’s roots, allowing us to understand the plant’s needs in real-time. This breakthrough moment revealed the vast potential for creating an ecosystem where plants and technology interact, teaching us the importance of listening to nature to sustain its life in artificial environments. It was a moment of truth and set the foundation for the deeper integration of AI in monitoring plant health.

Pixels of Plants

The discovery that each plant should be treated like an individual “pixel” was a revolutionary shift in how we approach sustainable plant care. Rather than bundling plants together as a single unit, BioBulb assigns each plant a unique ID, monitoring its specific conditions and needs. This approach allows for precise care, tailored to the individual plant’s growth stage, health, and environment. The concept of pixelation in plant life enables us to respond to each plant’s specific requirements, creating a more sustainable and efficient way to maintain indoor greenery at scale.

MACHINE LEARNING + COMPUTER VISION

Learning from Nature

Leveraging machine learning and computer vision, BioBulb is designed to monitor and learn from plants in real-time. The system captures data about plant growth, volume, color, and even subtle decolorations, while additional sensors embedded in the soil collect vital information such as moisture, temperature, and nutrient levels. Computer vision technology further analyzes photosynthesis activity using infrared data. With this comprehensive dataset, our AI model can determine the optimal growing conditions for each plant, ensuring long-term health and sustainability.

AI Model: Partnering with AWS + Slalom

In partnership with Slalom and AWS, BioBulb has developed a sophisticated AI model that supports the system’s ability to monitor and sustain plant life. These partnerships have been critical in building the backend infrastructure, where advanced algorithms process vast amounts of data to provide real-time insights into plant health. Our collaboration has also extended to building wireframes for user interfaces and back-end tools, ensuring a smooth and intuitive experience for both end users and engineers working on the platform.

ECOSYSTEM BUILDING

A Hardware + Software Platform

To ensure BioBulb’s hardware and software worked seamlessly together, we developed a custom ecosystem that could collect, analyze, and act upon data gathered from the plants. This involved designing proprietary hardware capable of measuring critical plant vitals and building software that could interpret this data and automate responses. The result is a platform that not only integrates smoothly with smart home systems but also provides the intelligence necessary to keep plants thriving in indoor environments, closing the gap between architecture, technology, and nature.

BRAND IDENTITY

Marc Shillum, a global leader in connecting brands and products and BioBulb's advisor, helped envision the DNA of Biobulb. A brand that responds to the scarcity of nature and utilizes technology to nurture nature. This has been the core story of the company and its Northstar in advancing its mission.
